President Donald Trump says the United States will decide within 15 days “which way we want to go” in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF.
AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!” Trump wrote on Twitter late Sunday night.
According to Reuters, Trump issued new guidelines on March 16 to slow the spread of coronavirus, including encouraging social distancing and working from home, for a period of 15 days.
“We’re asking everyone to work at home, if possible, postpone unnecessary travel, and limit social gatherings to no more than 10 people,” Trump said last week. “If we do this right, our country — and the world, frankly — but our country can be rolling again pretty quickly.
The 15-day period will end next Tuesday, according to the New York Post.
S. had 4,226 confirmed cases on coronavirus on March 16, the CDC said.
As of Sunday, March 22, that number has grown to more than 35,000, and more than 470 people have died of COVID-19 in the U.S.
, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Trump declared New York a major disaster area on Friday, and said Sunday that he’d do the same for California and Washington.
Reuters reports stay-at-home orders have been issued for residents in multiple states and cities, affecting more than 101 million Americans.
Trump did not elaborate on what a cure “worse than the problem itself” meant.
The Associated Press reported Sunday that one of Trump’s top concerns for his re-election campaign is the economy, which is likely headed for or already in a recession. Stocks have collapsed, businesses and schools have been forced to close, and major events, including sports and concerts, have been canceled or postponed.
But the biggest financial trouble may be unemployment: Goldman Sachs analysts estimate that 2.25 million Americans filed for jobless aid over the past week, a total slightly higher than the job gains for all of 2019.
Congress and the White House are currently in negotiations on an economic rescue package totaling nearly $2 trillion, but it’s unclear if it can prevent a recession.
“To me it’s not very complicated: We have to help the worker.
We have to save the companies,” Trump said Sunday. “We’re enduring a great national trial and we will prove that we can meet the moment.
We’re at war.”
